Chives

Spring chives on display from Gathering Together Farm

Latin Name: Allium schoenoprasum

Garlic Chives / Chinese Leeks: Allium tuberosum

Rakkyo Onion / Chinese Chives: Allium chinense

Chives are a very thin, fine green onion shoot that is packed with flavor and the perfect addition sprinkled on top of almost any dish. While most chives have hollow leaves just like scallions, garlic chives are different species with flat leek-like leaves and a more pungent garlic flavor.

Are Chive Flowers Edible?

Yes! Just like their garlic and leek cousins, chives put up little scapes in the spring too, which open into cute little purple pompoms of papery petals that are super garlicky and beautiful as garnish on salads and other dishes.
