Unlike Dragon fruit (pitahaya) which tend to be larger, milder in flavor, and grow on a vining epiphyte cactus, pitayas grow on tall columnar cactuses and are smaller, particularly sweet fruits that come in a wide variety of vibrant colors. The fruit is also completely covered in spikes and must be harvested carefully with tongs before removing the spikes.
